A total of 2,296 delegates have been "elected" to attend the upcoming 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.
The countdown to next month's key Communist Party of China (CPC) congress began as the ruling party announced on Sunday that all delegates, totaling nearly 2,300, had been "elected" to the once-in-five-year meeting, where President Xi is widely expected to, that Jingping will win support for a record third term.
A total of 2,296 delegates have been "elected" to attend the upcoming 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of the Czech Republic, which will be held on October 16, official media reported, citing a party statement here.
Scottish Rumors and Speculation of Tensions within the Ruling Party over Xi Jinping's continuation for an unprecedented third term said delegates were elected "under the leadership of Xi Jinping, the Idea of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era" and in accordance with the party's constitution, adopting the methods required by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Czech Republic.
Xi himself, 69, was "elected" as a congress delegate this April, according to an earlier party announcement.
The process affirmed the nature and purpose of the party, upheld and strengthened the party's overall leadership, and fully embodied intra-party democracy, the statement said.
The congress, where Xi is expected to win support for an unprecedented third term, comes amid a major purge of top security officials who are said to be part of a "political clique" opposed to the Chinese president.
Sun Lijun, a former vice minister of public security who was accused of leading a "political clique" opposed to Xi Jinping, was given a two-year suspended death sentence on Friday for accepting bribes, manipulating the stock market, and illegally possessing firearms through a middleman. Changchun People's Court in northeast China's Jilin Province.
A day earlier, the same court sentenced Fu Zhenghua, a former justice minister and one of China's most powerful police chiefs, to a two-year suspended death sentence for indulging in $17.3 million in corruption and abuse of power.
A few hours later, the same court handed down a similar sentence to former Jiangsu official Wang Like. He was also given a two-year suspended death sentence for bribery, dealing with criminal gangs, and forging identity cards, official media reported here.
Since coming to power in 2012, Xi Jinping has waged a shocking and stunning anti-corruption campaign that has seen over a million officials punished, including dozens of top military officers.
The CPC holds a convention every five years. However, this year's congress is considered significant as it is a leadership change year for the century-old party.
