It's a light, cozy history lesson, and there's a lot to admire: Coogan and Pope's script is warmly written, supported by a pleasantly cheerful Hitchcockian score by Alexandre Desplat and a flourish of playful fantasy where Richard himself is like a blink of an eye... an apparition with eyes played by Harry Lloyd.
But the film occasionally struggles to rise above the low stakes of its story. The Lost King feels a bit leaner compared to the emotional power of Philomena, the heartbreaking melancholy of a mother who never met her son. Perhaps the most dramatic scene actually takes place at a Leicester City Council planning meeting.

This is also drawn quite broadly. Coogan's character laments that we want to see stories like heroes and villains and that most of us fall somewhere in between—but his scripts fit that rule perfectly. disobeys and portrays the University of Leicester as a laughing, stealing, selfish villain...
