Forza Motorsport: Everything we know so far
Forza Motorsport is already revving up to be one of the biggest new games for 2023 for Xbox Game Studios. Set to come to Xbox Series X, Turn 10 Studios recently showed off more of the game during the Xbox Developer Direct showcase, going into detail about the impressive tech behind the upcoming racing simulation experience.
It's been over five years since the release of Forza Motorsport 7, and from everything we've seen so far, it certainly looks like the studio is shifting things up a gear.
With a host of impressive improvements in terms of visual fidelity, sound design, and vehicle physics, Forza Motorsport promises to make the most of the latest hardware.
First revealed in 2020, there are already plenty of reasons to get excited about the return of Motorsport. While there's a lot of fun to be had with the best Forza games in recent years – especially with the likes of Forza Horizon 5 – it's exciting to see Motorsport make a return in a big way.
So, if you're ready to get behind the wheel of what is quickly becoming one of the most anticipated upcoming Xbox Series X games, read on below to find out everything we know so far about Forza Motorsport.
The Forza Motorsport release date was previously set for 'Spring 2023'. But has now seemingly moved to a less specific 2023 launch window. This came during the Xbox Developer Direct showcase in January, with a teaser appearing that ended with "coming in 2023".
While we don't yet have a precise date, we do know it will be available on Game Pass from day one on Xbox Series X and PC (as well as getting a separate Steam release), though an Xbox One version has not been confirmed as yet.
What has been confirmed, however, is a Cloud Gaming version so you can play the game without actually owning expensive hardware, using a broadband internet connection to supply the game to your system should your internet have the bandwidth to handle it. Forza Motorsport gameplay is going to be a big update on what came before. While the game is set to be another simulation-leaning, serious racing experience like its predecessors, this 2023 release has an even more detailed simulation engine.
Each tire's physics will be sampled at six points instead of one, with eight times the number of samples per second, making for a 48x improvement in the fidelity of the physics calculations per tire over Forza Motorsport 7.
New gameplay additions include selectable tire compounds, tire and fuel management, and 'car-building' which suggests deeply customizable mechanical modding.
Multiplayer will receive an overhaul too, now with full free-practice sessions and qualifying available along with fuel strategy options for those who want a deeper experience, with real calendar-based race times, similar to Sony's Gran Turismo 7.
There have also been official mentions of 'all-new, different modes of the game', though these are under wraps at present.
During the Xbox Developer Direct in January 2023, the Turn 10 Studios development team gave us a closer look at Forza Motorsport and the tech that's bringing it to life to make it look, sound, and feel real (opens in new tab).
Creative director Chris Esaki opened the showcase by stating that Forza Motorsport has been "built from the ground up" to take advantage of the Xbox Series X, and claimed it is the "most technically advanced racing game ever made."
As well as going into detail about features such as ray-tracing and customization, we also got to hear about sound design, how it renders at 4K at 60fps and more. It certainly looks and sounds impressive from what we saw in the teaser, and most excitingly the studio says that Forza Motorsport it's the most comprehensive game in the series so far, which promises to have better tech advancements than Forza Motorsport 5, 6, and 7 combined.
Every Forza Motorsport track will be built afresh 'for the new generation'. Long-time fan favorite Maple Valley Raceway was shown during the showcase, now with luscious detail in the surrounding countryside that you might not even notice during normal gameplay.
But this world-building is one of the new game's big steps forward, with new procedural generation techniques for populating the trackside scenery, and full dynamic time-of-day effects. These will be available for every single track in the game and fully adjustable in terms of how fast time passes.
Accurate sun position, track temperatures, and ambient temperatures will affect your grip, as well as new dynamic 'rubbering in' of the racing line, and of course weather. Other series favorite tracks include freshly laser-scanned WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and Circuit de Spa Francorchamps, but two new circuits were shown too – South Africa's Kyalami (a former F1 circuit) and the fictional, high-speed GP style course, Circuit Hakone, set in Japan near Mount Fuji. Further all-new tracks will be announced closer to launch.
An official list will be announced at a later date, though we know of 37 Forza Motorsport cars thus far. The main star of the showcase was the BMW M8 GTE, adorned with a 'Mission-8' livery. New cars spotted so far include the Nissan 370Z Nismo, the Audi RS E-Tron GT, and Brabham's BT62 hypercar. Other returning cars include the 2019 McLaren Senna GTR, the 2020 Lamborghini Huracan EVO, and the gorgeous 1966 McLaren M2B.
Ferrari, Mercedes, Audi, Aston Martin, Chevrolet, and Porsche are standouts among the other marques shown so far, and we were also treated to a close-up of the legendary 1991 Le Mans-winning Mazda 787B. It has been confirmed that the focus will be on modern cars and motorsport, and the selection shown so far should give you a good indication of what to expect from the game.
One area that was shown off in detail is the revised Forza Motorsport damage system. Naturally, in a game full of licensed cars, you're not going to see Burnout or Wreckfest levels of automotive destruction. But car bodywork clearly dents to a modest degree and scratches up during collisions, particularly around the edges of metal elements, including abrasions on the spokes of alloy wheels.
However, when presented with an opportunity to talk about how damage and dirt affect the car in more ways than aesthetics, the game's Creative Director, Chris Esaki, dodged the question and talked about how 'the story of the car' is told through its scars, so there probably won't be mechanical damage in Forza Motorsport.
Turn 10's GM Dan Greenawalt confirmed that ray-tracing will be applied to all scenes of Forza Motorsport, including real-time, on-track gameplay. That's an impressive feat given Gran Turismo 7 on PS5 only lets you use it in replays and showroom scenes, and even then at a reduced frame rate.
With Forza Motorsport ray tracing, you can see cars reflected in other cars' bodywork, exhibiting spot highlights from the twice-reflected sun. There will even be globally-illuminated ray-traced lighting available for non-gameplay scenes, which should be spectacular.

Latest ‘Forza Motorsport’ racing game due in 2023
Forza Motorsport is returning in 2023 for its eighth installment, giving Xbox racing fans the chance to virtually drive more than 500 cars.
The latest installment of Turn 10 Studios and Microsoft’s Forza Motorsport racing game is due to launch later this year, ending a six-year wait for fans of the series.
Exclusive to Xbox consoles and Windows computers, Forza Motorsport is the eighth iteration of the racing video game series which debuted in 2005 and spawned seven titles until the launch of Forza Motorsport 7 in 2017.
In a video posted to YouTube, Turn 10 Studios – the game’s developers – and Microsoft provided an update on Forza Motorsport’s progress, with its launch now delayed from the North American summer of 2023 (June to August) to an unspecified time later this year.
According to the developers, more than 500 cars will be available in the game from its launch date – about 200 less than Forza Motorsport 7 which was released with approximately 700 cars, later expanding to include another 130 as downloadable content.
The number of tracks has also been reduced, dropping from 33 circuits to 20. Australia’s famous Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst has featured in every Forza Motorsport game since the fifth title in 2013, but it has not been confirmed for the latest installment.
Under the skin, Turn 10 Studios claims its new game has more advanced physics simulation than its predecessors, while the computer modeling of cars, tracks, and the surrounding environment will also show significant improvements.
Forza Motorsport is the first game in the franchise to be optimized for the latest-generation Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, but gamers who play on the older Xbox One will still be able to play it through the Xbox Game Pass service.
Microsoft and Turn 10 Studios are expected to announce more details about Forza Motorsport closer to the game’s release later this year.

The Forza Motorsport release date will be sometime in 2023. It will release both on PC and Xbox Series X/S. This time window was announced during the Microsoft Developer Direct stream. It was first teased back in the summer of 2020 during the Xbox Games Showcase.

According to Gabe Garcia, Vehicle Art Director at Turn 10 Studios, Forza Motorsport 8 “features over 500 cars for you to collect, race, and customize with more than 800 unique upgrades”. Of these vehicles, 100 will be brand new to the series and feature among them “the most modern race cars we’ve ever featured on our roster”. Moreover, you can race them across 20 different environments that constantly change depending on the weather.
New to the series is a single-player career mode that delves deep into modifying your ride to perform the best it can in any race. We don’t know what this new mode entails, but we expect it to be more hands-on than any previous Forza game.
As racing is a brutal sport at times, the physics engine needs constant upgrading, and the “advancements in our physics model are greater than Forza Motorsport 5, 6, and 7 combined”. Materials and shaders are built with ray tracing in mind, with realistic light responses on the paint, with dirt accumulation and paint chipping reflecting better what happens in the game.
Forza Motorsport 8 will be natively compatible with Windows Sonic and Dolby Atmos. The re-recorded library will give you a huge range of sounds, including those of any upgrades. If you have a turbo that would make a distinctive sound in real life, that sound will be in Forza Motorsport 8. Regional track announcers and tire and suspension audio improvements also help with immersion, as do new features such as dynamic type-of-day weather systems and lighting tweaks.
